Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific calls from the official, following the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
