Major Web Outage Hits Dozens Online Platforms and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web disruption has disrupted many sites and apps worldwide, as users noting problems connecting to the web following issues at the online infrastructure system.

The affected platforms include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned operations including its main retail site and the Ring security home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of difficulties reaching the the tax authority online portal on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring users turned to online platforms to report their home gadgets were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of problems on specific applications reached the many thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the eastern region of the US at Amazon Web Services, a section that offers crucial internet framework for many companies, who rent out resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global online services service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “elevated error rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt services worldwide, with the outage tracking website indicating problems with the identical platforms in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a surge in outages on Monday morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the outage originated.
