He has asserted his innocence about the charges

Previous FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the proceedings terminated for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to submit several motions to terminate the case before a trial, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to take over the case.

James Comey's proceedings was first handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into another rival - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.

After listening to the judge state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.

Historical Information

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

In a video the former director posted to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was innocent and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have known for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Thus initiate a trial."

The charges against James Comey emerged after the former president shared on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
